Martins Ferry lies along the Ohio River and is rooted in history. It is the oldest settlement in Ohio. It was founded in 1779 and it was an extension of Wheeling, WV. It officially became a city in 1865. It was mapped out by Absolum Martin who operated a ferry. Later, the city’s grid was redesigned by his son Ebenezer Martin. He originally named the town “Martinsville,” but was later renamed “Martin’s Ferry” for Absolum’s ferry.
If you would like to learn more about the city’s history, the Sedgwick House located in Martins Ferry has many historical artifacts that are associated with the town.
Martins Ferry is about 60 miles from Pittsburgh, PA and about 128 miles from Columbus, OH. This makes Martins Ferry very accessible to two International airports, restaurants, culture, entertainment, and shopping.
Martins Ferry is also about 4 miles from Wheeling, WV. There are additional options for dining, entertainment, and shopping located in the city for Martins Ferry residents to enjoy.
When residing in Martins Ferry, you get the benefit of being near bigger cities without having to live in the hustle and bustle.
