The name “Moundsville” is derived from the ancient burial mound, which is now known as the Grave Creek Mound. The Adena culture built the mound in 250-150 BC. Today, you can visit the museum then walk up the mound to the top where you can see a wonderful view of the city.
In 1771, the area was first settled. It was first called Elizabethtown in 1798. A nearby settlement was named Mound City. In the year 1866, the two settlements consolidated to become what it’s known by today, “Moundsville.”
The former West Virginia State Penitentiary also resides in Moundsville. It was built in 1886 and decommissioned in 1995. You can visit the penitentiary nowadays. It’s open to the public for a multitude of things - including historical and paranormal tours.
Another historical place of interest in Moundsville is the Strand Theatre. Merton A. Sybert opened the theater in 1920 to show first-run films. It closed in 1968 and reopened from 1976 until 1996. The Strand Preservation Society formed in 2002 to revamp the theatre as a piercing arts space.
As you can see, Moundsville’s history is very interesting, so if you’re looking for a place to call home that has a rich history Moundsville could be a great option for you.

Moundsville has many great options within the city, but it’s also close to bigger cities. For instance, Pittsburgh, PA is about 68 miles away and Columbus, OH is about 127 miles away.
This makes it very convenient for people living in Moundsville to get away for the day to travel to entertainment such as professional ball games, popular musical artists, and amusement parks.
Being close to bigger cities also is a positive thing because that means two international airports are nearby.
When considering Moundsville as a place to live this may help because you would have access to transportation, concert venues, restaurants and other options in a bigger city without actually living in the hustle and bustle of a large city.
