For instance, it’s the home of Wheeling Hospital - WVU Medicine. Founded in 1860, it is the oldest hospital in West Virginia as well as one of the oldest hospitals in the United States that’s been in continuous operation. Now, it has 223 beds with about 150 primary care and specialty physicians. They offer a wide range of services and specialty services. There are also numerous health centers around Wheeling that are associated with the main hospital.

Another favorite In the Centre Market is Later Alligator. Their specialty is sweet and savory crepes, but the menu doesn't end there. You will find wraps, salads, specialty drinks, and much more.

Bike, walk, or run on Wheeling Heritage Trail. This trail is part of the WV Rails-to-Trails and was once part of the B & O line. It is 16.5 miles long, flat, and paved. For some added adventure, follow the self-guided tour signs along your route.

Wheeling is rooted in history. Founded in 1769 by Colonel Ebenezer Zane, Wheeling was a popular city because of its location on the Ohio River. This made the city ideal for trade.
Iron and steel mills arose in the latter part of the 19th century. Glass, cigars, and nail factories also became abundant in the city. In fact, cut iron nails became a major part of Wheeling’s economy. So much so that it was named “nail capital of the world.”
Another fun historical fact is that Wheeling was once the state’s capital. It was moved to Charleston in 1870 then back to Wheeling in 1875. Shortly after, in 1885, it was moved back to Charleston where it remains today.

Wheeling is in the middle of major cities. It is about 60 miles from Pittsburgh, PA and about 127 miles from Columbus, OH. This puts Wheeling close to two International airports, restaurants, culture, and more shopping.
Many Wheeling locals benefit from having a small town atmosphere, without sacrificing the larger city benefits. In any given day, you can travel to a large city for work or entertainment and still be home to sleep in your own bed.
